Yay!! Our 67th Independence Day is here. The day to ‘remember’ our country, wave that tricolor flag, listen to overtly emotional speeches on the television, sit through a string of patriotic movies and crib about the British Raj and how it crippled ‘what could have been’. While you pay homage to the true heroes, the constructors of our great nation, you might as well adopt a couple of pledges for yourself. Nope, not the ‘I will eat less, jog more, be nice, read something more sensible than a Chetan Bhagat’ kinda pledges! How about something to supercharge your business? Sample this-
I will think long-term
While living in the moment is good, planning a bit ahead can save you a lot of surprises. Think of your business as a month old baby. That crying, pooping, slimy miracle is gonna grow into something awesome someday. Think ahead, and be prepared.
I will get a website for my business
“Website?? For me??” Yup, you!! No matter how small your operation, it won’t hurt to generate some publicity for yourself. Unless you are contracted by the CIA or have some kinda public scam brewing in your mind, a website is the ideal platform to attract welcome attention from your target audience and create an identity for your brand. These days, good-professionally created websites come reasonably priced and allied services like SEO, SMM and SEM can put you right on the map.
I will be more responsible with Facebook
Your Facebook status must be more focussed than bits about what you had for lunch, or the epiphany you had about the true meaning of life after a couple of kegs of beer. Facebook is a powerful tool that can bring you all the attention your business needs- use it well. Create a profile page for your business, get some online marketing and start fishing!!
I will indulge in Quality (even if it’s costly)
Often, quality is shown the door because its costs more than the cheaper, plentifully available options. Be it human resource, hardware, infrastructure or the antivirus for your computer, encourage the option that guarantees quality. Trust us; you are saving money in the long run.
When in doubt or need, I will ask
Business networking works wonders, so does simple- everyday communication that puts your business in a positive light in front of an audience that may or may not be your target demographic. When you need assistance, ask. When meeting an expert, question. Before entering a networking or marketing situation, arm yourself to the teeth with information about why your business is here to make a difference. On a different note, if you encounter too much hostility, pay in kind- hurl a brick!
Independence Day isn’t just a day to ‘remember’, it’s a day to attest to the fact that we owe a debt of gratitude to this great country of ours. By committing yourself to your business, through pledges that prompt you to act, you are playing your part in building an economically strong India. Don’t just talk, be the change!
